1. Layoffs at St. Joseph's Medical Center leave staff asking, 'Who's next?' (stocktonia.org) — Staff at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton are reeling after recent layoffs cut clerical positions and shifted extra work onto nurses, who fear delays in patient care. Longtime secretaries describe scrambling for new roles, temporary income gaps, and deep anxiety about who might be next as the hospital cites financial pressures and cost-cutting needs.

2. The mayor's aide is under fire. Who gets a say in his employment? (stocktonia.org) — Stockton’s mayoral spokesperson remains in his job despite calls from some councilmembers to revisit his appointment, because the City Charter gives only the mayor power over that position. A tense August 18 council meeting, marked by multiple recusals and public criticism, underscored confusion over who can hold the mayor’s staff accountable. For now, any change to his employment or the council’s authority would require a voter-approved charter amendment.

3. There's good news and bad news for Stockton boaters who launch at Buckley Cove (stocktonia.org) — If you launch your boat at Buckley Cove, prepare for a full closure of the boat ramp from October through December while crews dredge years of built-up sediment from Stockton’s waterways. The work should make boating safer and deeper around the marina and Stockton Sailing Club, but you’ll need to use launch sites at Louis and Morelli parks during construction. Crews expect to remove debris and tens of thousands of cubic yards of silt.

4. Woman, teen arrested in connection with fatal Lodi stabbing (bluewaterhealthyliving.com) — A woman and teenage boy have been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Lodi resident Roberto Ramos, with the adult suspect due in Stockton court on August 31. Lodi police are still seeking tips from the public as they investigate possible motives and relationships, and Crime Stoppers is taking anonymous information on the case.
