Canyon-geddon is Over—Coldwater Opens 2 Days Early

Paul Krekorian opened the major thoroughfare Tuesday night.

After a month of heavy construction to replace a nearly century-old water line, the six-day-a-week closures of Coldwater Canyon Avenue between Mulholland Drive and Ventura Boulevard ended Tuesday night, two days ahead of schedule.

The construction had been expected to last through Thursday, but Department of Water and Power officials announced that when the road reopens at 7 p.m., it will stay open.

Left-turn restrictions in the construction area will remain in effect until June 1.

The project began March 23, closing the stretch of Coldwater from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays.

The project involved the replacement of a 60-inch DWP water line that is 99 years old and which spectacularly ruptured in 2009, causing a mess that prompted nearly $8 million in legal claims against the city.
