VAN NUYS, CA -- One person in a car was killed and three others were injured Tuesday when a car went over the side of the San Diego (405) Freeway in Van Nuys and landed on a homeless encampment, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 6:06 p.m. on the southbound side of the freeway south of Roscoe Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

One person who ended up crushed beneath the car -- reported by the CHP to be a female who had been inside the vehicle -- was pronounced dead at the scene, Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
