Congress Backs Los Angeles' Bid to Host Summer Olympics

Los Angeles, CA -- Los Angeles' bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics this week got a boost from Congress, with its members voting to throw their support behind the event, officials said today.

A resolution backing the bid was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives earlier this week, and by the Senate yesterday, according to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who co-sponsored the Senate version with Georgia senator Johnny Isakson.

"This resolution shows the International Olympic Committee that Congress is united behind Los Angeles to host the 2024 Summer Olympics," Feinstein said.

Feinstein said Los Angeles's "rich sporting legacy and history of cultural innovation make it the perfect backdrop to host a modern Olympiad."

"Los Angeles is an international city that truly embodies the Olympic spirit and is ready to welcome the entire world to the United States," she said.

The House resolution was sponsored by Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Los Angeles, and Stephen Knight, R-Palmdale.

Paris, Rome and Budapest also are vying to host the Olympics in 2024, with the International Olympic Committee expected to select the host city by September 2017.
