Cyclists Rejoice! Drivers Beware: CicLAvia Is Here!

Portions of Lankershim and Ventura boulevards in North Hollywood and Studio City will be closed to motorized vehicles Sunday for the first edition of CicLAvia in the San Fernando Valley.

The opening ceremony will be held at 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of Chandler and Lankershim boulevards, near the North Hollywood Red Line Station, with Mayor Eric Garcetti and several Los Angeles City Council members set to attend.

CicLAvia will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with hubs at Coldwater Canyon Avenue on the east end of the route, Laurel Canyon Boulevard -- where the Studio City Farmers Market is held -- and the North Hollywood and Universal City/Studio City Metro Red Line stations.

Attractions along the six-mile route include the North Hollywood Arts District, Universal City, the Campo de Cahuenga adobe house, the Studio City Farmers Market and the Sportsmen’s Lodge.

Metro has arranged extra Orange Line bus service and longer cars on the Red Line subway to increase capacity during the event. Bus detours are listed at http://www.metro.net/service/advisories/update/special/1160/

Several off-ramps on the Ventura (134) and Hollywood (101) freeways will be closed during the event, according to Caltrans. They include the Vineland Boulevard off-ramps from the northbound and southbound Hollywood Freeway, the Campo de Cahuenga off-ramp from the northbound Hollywood Freeway, and the left turn lane of the Lankershim Boulevard off-ramp of the northbound Hollywood Freeway.

CicLAvia was inspired by Ciclovia in Bogota, Colombia, a similar event aimed at getting people out of their cars and using alternative forms of transportation.
