Here we are, most of us living on a fixed income, getting zero interest on our life savings. We are being told there is no inflation. The Consumer Price Index tells us prices are not rising that much, just inching up a tiny bit is all. Do these people put gas in their cars, heat their homes or eat food? Why the CPI does not include energy or food in their index is, it seems to me, a lie which they would like seniors to believe. The prices we pay for gas, energy and food are becoming obscene. I received some information today about the government paying charges on empty bank accounts. Every day, friends tell me about surgical procedures they need but are not sure Medicare will approve. Nobody can explain what has happened. How did we ever get to this point? Does Washington DC have a grievance list against us? So many of our generation fought in battle to protect our principles. We've made tremendous sacrifices. We've been frugal, trying to buy things only when we could afford to pay for them, putting off plans for furthering our education, waiting for retirement to take vacations. Are we being taken for granted or simply being shunted off into the dark corners of society? They say you can tell a lot about a society by how it treats its elders. Remember when we went for two years without a cost of living increase? How is it that during an election year we suddenly received that cost of living allowance? Do they think we're that naive or stupid? Don’t get me started. My parents had suffered through the Depression and like the rest of their generation, did whatever they needed to do to give their children a good, stable, healthy life. They wanted us to have a decent education and a better standard of living without the struggles and challenges they had to face.
We are the sandwich generation – attempting to repay our parents and trying to comfort the fears of our children. Our economy is on life supports. Our children cannot always pay their bills. They need a hand up and we are happy to provide it. While we struggle to make it through to the end of the month, we hear about taxpayer money being squandered and wasted on programs the government has no business investing in. We need to raise taxes because the people in Egypt or Pakistan must get their foreign aid even though many seniors have stopped taking medication in order to cut their living expenses. Our children are suffering and living below the poverty line. Youngsters are killing each other in our major cities. Our government, on the other hand, are the wealthiest group in the country. Off on vacation taking a much needed rest after having done nothing for the American people in years. All parties are to blame -- this is an equal-opportunity indictment. We are drowning in debt, our people have lost their jobs, their life savings, their homes. I guess everything's fine. After all, we have no inflation, do we?
We are good, loyal and steadfast. We love our children. We love our parents. We love our country. When our savings are completely gone, we will close our bank accounts. We hope our government will do the same.
