For Whom The Bell Tolls—Carpenter Students Want New Ones
When they come back to school, the elementary school gets to vote on new sounds for bells.
Kaelyn Park says her friends in fourth grade just always complain about the bells.
Alexander Rotmensz calls them flat-out “loud and disturbing.”
So, Park, Rotmensz and Olivia Goldberg—representing the Student Council—went to the Carpenter Community Charter Governance Council and asked them to change the bells.

It wasn’t something that most of the Governance Council (made up of parents and teachers) even knew was a problem for the students.
But, Principal Joe Martinez said that shortly after school begins in the New Year (next week), he will offer students a choice.

“We actually have a system that has 10 different bells,” Martinez said. “I will select three options and play them.”
The student body will then get to pick A, B and C and vote on which bell is most favorable to them.
The Governance Council was resoundingly supportive of the idea.
Outside the meeting, after presenting the successful proposal, Park said, “I’m pretty happy [about the outcome]. I think we were all pretty nervous at first, but it was an important concern for the students.”
