Joan Pelico presented Irene Epstein Memorial Scholarship Awards to three high ranking college-bound Fairfax High School seniors in a special ceremony on May 13, 2014. This scholarship was created in 1996 to aid underprivileged, academically-deserving students in attending college. Pelico, Chief of Staff for Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz, to Luna O. Gonzalez, Stephanie Esmeralda Ortega, and Victoria Hong. This was Pelico’s fourth year presenting the Awards.
“George Epstein's beloved wife, Irene, left behind her wish to create a scholarship program for less fortunate students,” explained Pelico, “so they would have the opportunity for a better education.” Pelico, a candidate for Los Angeles City Councilmember to represent District 4, expressed her passion for youth and for supporting the opportunities available to them. “Every child should be given the chance, and the tools, to succeed."
Pelico began her focus on youth as a volunteer and eventually President of the Parents Association at her daughter’s school, Sherman Oaks Elementary, and stayed on as director of development at the request of the Association even after her daughter had graduated.
