Kelsey Woo Wins State Speech Contest

The Harvard-Westlake 18-year-old beat 5,000 students.

Kelsey Woo, 18, who attends Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, won $3,000 in scholarship money and beat 5,000 students in a speech contest.

The competition was held in Sacramento, and the senior gave an inspiring speech to the sponsoring agency, the Veterans of Foreign Wars. It was their annual Voice of Democracy contest and she gave a talk called: "Does my generation have a role in America's future?"

She received a standing ovation among the 250  teachers, politicians, journalists, officials and veterans in the audience.

Kelsey plans to head to Washington, D.C. in March to compete in the national speech competition, with a $30,000 grand prize scholarship.
