No Strike, But Teachers Plan to Take to the Streets

Parents and teachers plan to unite and picket to save jobs, and are asking supporters to wear black.

Teachers plan to picket before school and then head to a downtown rally on Friday, but they won't strike, like some hoped for during a teacher's union vote. Teachers are asking that supporters in the community wear black on Friday to show support for their cause.

Some principals at the Los Angeles Unified School District schools in the east San Fernando Valley are giving the teachers some lee-way to head to the main school building office on Friday to join the demonstration that is planned for Friday. The day is a minimum day in all of the schools, meaning that many schools have a shortened or half-day schedule.

At , parents plan to carpool downtown and take children to the rally too, with signs. They are striking a budget plan that slashed about 3,000 teachers due to a $596 million budget deficit, and a dozen of the middle school teachers are included. A one-day strike plan was averted when a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled that the strike would violate the union's temporary contract and risk student health and welfare. Teachers violating the order could face fines of up to $1,000 and disciplinary action.
