Studio City Church Celebrates National Coming Out Day

Congregation Seeks Formal Recognition as LGBT Supporter.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Studio City (UUCSC) has begun the process of gaining recognition as a “Welcoming Congregation.”  The church, which has a tradition of being inclusive and boasts a diverse membership, will also be celebrating National Coming Out day with a sermon entitled “If Sex Isn’t Religious, Nothing Is,” a discussion of different “coming out” experiences and a donation to a local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)-focused organization.

UUCSC is completing steps to be designated “A Welcoming Congregation,” a program developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). This voluntary curriculum is for congregations that seek to become more inclusive towards LGBT people.

UUCSC hopes to expand on their long tradition in the community of social justice and activism with this official designation.  Members of the Congregation will undergo months of training, outreach and special events to encourage LGBT awareness and inclusiveness.

As part of celebrating National Coming Out Day (October 11), UUCSC will be donating the collection from their October 9 service to The Trevor Project, an organization that provides life-saving services and resources for LGBT youth.

The UUCSC celebrates religious diversity and strives for social justice, encouraging each person to find her or his own answers to the great religious questions of life in a community of open hearts and questioning minds.  Regular services are every Sunday at 10 AM at 12355 Moorpark Drive in Studio City.  For more information, please visit www.uustudiocity.org.
