Tears, Fears, Smiles at First Day of School

Teachers, principals and parents report smooth sailing the first day of school, so far. Add your photos to the View Finder!

One little Kindergartner cried for an hour,  but his mom cried for the whole day. A staff person called her hourly to check in saying the boy was fine, and by the end of the day he was great and acclimated to school—but mom was still a wreck.

Another student dreaded going to class, fearing the teacher he had was “mean and strict.” She addressed it up front, talking about the difference between being “mean” and “strict.” Now he’s eager to go to school.

Another Studio City school has a famous dad, who was distracting because he was signing autographs for kids. A teacher had to ask him to leave.

The air conditioning wasn’t enough at some schools, as temperatures Some people transferred to different schools and regret it, others love their new locations. It’s the first day of school in the Valley.

At Rio Vista Elementary they’re getting ready for their big Back to School picnic on Saturday. At , Principal Joe Martinez (like most of the other schools) put a moratorium in changing teachers for two weeks until things settle down. All the schools celebrated a rise in test scores and congratulated all the students.

The biggest problem for the rest of the week is going to be the heat. The principals are keeping everyone inside as much as possible, and air conditioners are still pumping, but reports are that the second floor of the and buildings are still a bit hot.
