The John Walker Solution on Redistricting
President of the Studio City Neighborhood Council shows a simple solution to keeping Studio City together.
Mr. Chair and Members of the Commission:
I want to thank you for allowing me to speak at the Commission hearings yesterday in the Van Nuys Chamber.
During all the redistricting hearings, the primary objectives heard most, from all over Los Angeles was to keep all Neighborhood Councils in one District and allow those communities with interests in common to stay together and whole.
This was and still is a herculean task, and one for which I have respect for the attempt. However, the process is terribly flawed, when realities are offered which meet those criteria, only to be ignored.
Personally, I would prefer to have had Toluca Lake acknowledge itself as being in the Valley, and stay on as our partners in CD2.
However, that is not my argument here. I will endorse whatever District our neighboring community wants - AS LONG AS THAT DOES NOT INTRUDE INTO STUDIO CITY.
Since the issue here is allowing a tiny district to break off , and at each Commission meeting I have attended, we have been told that fairness has always been a goal, and that this is not a *Political* issue, then I offer up an opportunity which allows you to demonstrate that, and which allows Toluca Lake to remain in CD4 without any infringement into Studio City.
I respectfully submit for consideration the attached Maps and information. These boundary lines were allowed in 1986, so there is precedent, which would mean that it cannot be legally challenged and offer NO REASON why this would not be acceptable.
If this is truly to be a fair and representative divide for our community, and not a fight for what are referred to as *Jewels of the community, the Metro and the Campo*, which already exist in Studio City, then make it that.
Do not show the people of Los Angeles that there are any ulterior motives, which have nothing to do with fairness or following the goals of the Redistricting commission.
Respectfully
John T. Walker
President SCNC
