Trump's California 'Breeding Concept' Tweet Breeds Confusion

White House officials and reporters tussle over President Donald Trump's meaning in a tweet about California's "breeding concept."

LOS ANGELES, CA — "There is a Revolution going on in California,” and it apparently involves our “breeding concept,” according to the President Donald Trump.

Just what the president means by “breeding concept,” is anyone’s guess.

Once again, the president created a firestorm with his trigger happy twitter fingers in a series of tweets last week attacking California’s so-called sanctuary laws. On Monday, reporters attempted to pin down just what the president meant when he tweeted: “Soooo many Sanctuary areas want OUT of this ridiculous, crime infested & breeding concept.”

The president’s critics have insisted the phrase “breeding concept” is racist, evoking, white supremacy an Nazi groups that have long used the dehumanizing phrase “breeding” to lament minority population growth. His defenders, however, say the President was referring metaphorically to ideas breeding in California. In a terse exchange with reporters Monday White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders insisted the President wasn’t spreading racist propaganda.

"Was he making a derogatory term about Latinos in California—that they breed a lot or that they’re prone to breeding?” CNN’s Jim Acosta asked.

“No, he’s talking about the problem itself growing and getting bigger,” said Sanders.

American Urban Radio Networks correspondent April Ryan wasn’t buying it. "But what does 'breeding' mean? What does 'breeding' mean to this President? Because when you think of breeding, you think of animals breeding—populating,” she said.

“Certainly, I think that it can mean a lot of things to a lot of people, but the President is talking about a growing problem,” replied Sanders. “And I addressed that with Jim, and I don’t have anything else to add."
Still, Playboy’s White House correspondent asked for a literal definition of “breeding.”

"To be specific, he’s not talking about people having babies, yes?" he asked, according to Newsweek.

At a loss, Sanders said she'd go back to the president "to ask him to dig into that deeper" and "to be more specific," Newsweek reported.

Trump spent the last week fuming at California Governor Jerry Brown. The president had ordered the deployment of the National Guard to the Mexican border to stem the tide of illegal crossings, but in sending 400 California National Guard troops, Brown limited their role to fighting gangs and drug and human trafficking - not immigration enforcement.

The move infuriated Trump, who tweeted, “

“Governor Jerry Brown announced he will deploy ‘up to 400 National Guard Troops’ to do nothing.”
He threatened not to fund the troops, but not long after he made the threat, the Pentagon relented on funding.

Back in the Golden State, high profile Californian’s had their own theories about the President’s wording.

“Nazi talk - they are very interested in who breeds with who - gotta keep the pure blood - I’ve never heard of a specific community being a breeding concept - is there some other way to interpret this?” Tweeted actor John Cusack.

:This, of course, bears no relation to reality. This is just an appeal to his nativist base. By the way, what is a “breeding concept?,” tweeted Barbra Streisand‏.

“No matter how loud the dog whistles, remember that border crossings are near an all-time low, border communities are already militarized, and deploying troops for a manufactured crisis is beyond wasteful,” tweeted the ACLU. “Also, @realDonaldTrump — these are human beings, not a breeding concept.”

As Californians await clarification from the president, his supporters took to Twitter in his defense.

“A “Breeding concept” is an “expanding concept.” You’re reading into it whatever suits your narrative. Sad, really,” tweeted Matthew Taylor.
