Congratulations to Harvard-Westlake upper school science teacher Wendy Van Norden, who authored two chapters in the recently-released textbook, “The Teacher-Friendly Guide(TM) to the Earth Science of the Western US.” Two students, Sam Schlesinger ‘15 and Audrey Wilson ‘15, contributed photographs to the publication.

According to its description on amazon.com, “Teacher-Friendly Guides(TM) are not curricula, but are teacher development resources designed to help teachers incorporate ideas into existing curricula. The Earth Sciences series focuses on the local environment, from geologic history to rocks, fossils, topography, mineral resources, glaciers, energy, soils, climate, Earth hazards, and fieldwork, as well as a chapter on the National Science Standards. Each Guide provides background information in non-technical terms to help a teacher make sense of the details of regional features and provide the tools to understand his/her local geology. Each chapter is written to stand alone, and is cross-referenced and accompanied by a resource list and glossary. The West volume covers the U.S. states of Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Hawaii, and Alaska.
