Thanks for a successful final Family Reader Day of the school year! We had a record number of parents come to the classrooms to read with the students. And Thank you again to our Hospitality committee for the abundant and tasty breakfast provided afterward! If you see Anna Paniagua, Catherine Mead and Aliyah Bielma on campus this week, give them a big thank you for their incredible work all year long.
Thank you to all who signed the petition so far for Our Children Our Future. We need many more, so please see Bonnie to sign.
We need another volunteer to sell snacks after-school on Fridays. It's a fun job, very rewarding, and much appreciated by our students. Please email Solange atsnacksales@valleyviewelementary.org or see Amber in the PTA room on Friday afternoon.

NEXT YEAR'S MUSIC PROGRAM Every pupil will participateA grant from the California Institute of Contemporary Arts is allowing every student in Valley View to study music for the first semester next year.
The program was tested this year with 4, 5, 6th grades allowing students to pick from Guitar, Keyboard, Music Appreciation or Songwriting. Everyone got their first choice. After the in-school classes, those who wanted to continue classes (or switch to another) were allowed to AFTER SCHOOL on Fridays for FREE.
No extra money is required. All books, instruments and classes are FREE, no one is required to buy anything. We even allow check-out of instruments through the Library.
Because we'd have to get a whole new set of smaller guitars, we will have a combination Keyboard/Music Appreciation class for K-2nd grades, and 3-6 will get to choose between Guitar, Keyboard and Songwriting/Music (two classes were combined). Letters will be sent explaining the program, but start discussing it with your child. It doesn't matter if they have experience or not.
WE ENCOURAGE PARENT VOLUNTEERS! Some of the Keyboards and Guitars are donated and we can always use help. For the next two Fridays before spring break, come to the Library to see Guitar, Computer Room to see Keyboard and Room 14 to see Songwriting. It doesn't matter if you have a child in it or not. After Spring Break, we will break the after-school free classes to two half-hour rather than one-hour sessions, so that there will be some play time.
PARENTS MUST CHECK WITH THEIR CHILD to see that they are taking the classes. We asked for a commitment for the after-school students of 10 weeks, but many have dropped out and prefer to play on the playground. It is up to you to emphasize the importance of staying in the class and committing to it-they cannot come and go. Ms Cain:ccain1@lausd.net in the Library can tell you if your child has attended the classes.
The Music Program is run by Robin Randall at:robinrandallsongs@yahoo.com.
We're open to ideas and suggestions to make this work. And again, this is not paid for by PTA funds or LAUSD. And, so we won't take much class time or interrupt academics, the only school time will be during Fall Semester-the rest is all voluntary.
Look for the songs that were produced and players at the Spring Festival, you'll be impressed!
Congratulations to Angela Bouldin, Valley View 6th grader, for her selection to participate in the 2012 Miss Pre-Teen Los Angeles/Anaheim pageant competition that will take place this Saturday March 17th.
Angela will be competing for her share of thousands of dollars in prizes and specialty gifts that will be distributed to contestants. Angela will be competing in the Miss Pre-Teen division, one of four divisions with young ladies aged 7 to 19 competing in modeling routines, which include casual wear and formal wear. Most importantly, Angela will display her personality and interviewing skills while interviewing with the judging panel. Personality is the number one aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of competition.
If Angela wins the title of Miss Pre-Teen LA/Anaheim, she would go to the National Competition in Orlando, Florida. Over $30,000.00 in prizes and awards will be presented at that competition, and each competitor will enjoy a 6-day/5-night expense-paid trip in Orlando, Florida. Community businesses, organizations, and private individuals would assist Angela in participating in the competition by becoming an official sponsor to her, which would provide all the necessary training, rehearsals, and financial support and allow Angela to become a very confident and well-prepared contestant.
GOOD LUCK, ANGELA! WE'RE ROOTING FOR YOU!
SUPPORT FAMILY FIELD DAY Mr. G Runs L.A. MarathonDear Valley ViewParents,
Thank you for your continued support of me for the LA Marathon and Valley View Family Field Day. Field Day is the culminating event funded by the donations from the Marathon. It is designed to simulate what the Marathon experience has meant for me: taking yourself out of your comfort zone, challenging yourself, and supporting each other to achieve a goal. During Field Day, students are put in groups of all different grade levels and then they work together as they move through the various stations. The stations are designed to be challenging, fun, and to have students build on their teamwork skills. All students who participate in Field Day receive a medal so they can walk away with a feeling of accomplishment. A healthy lunch is provided for our students as we are also trying to promote healthy living. This day cannot happen without your support. Please donate any amount that you can, and we will also be asking for volunteers to help with Field Day, which will be held on a date to be determined in June. Thank you for everything.
Sincerely,
Mr. G
Editor's Note: Mr. G will be running the LA Marathon on Sunday 3/18, proudly wearing his Valley View t-shirt. Our goal for funding Family Field Day is $1,500 in order to pay for buses for this unique all-school field trip. FIELD TRIP HIGHLIGHT Your PTA Dollars at WorkOur adorable Kindergarteners are even more excited this week than usual! This Wednesday 3/14, our K students will get to go on their very first off-campus field trip! A very exciting milestone in their elementary school experience! And one that students in most LAUSD schools will never have. Thank you, Parents, for working so hard all year to give Valley View students this experience in abundance!
This week, when you see a Kindergartener at school, take a moment and smile big, remembering that first feeling of being a big kid and going on an off-campus adventure with your schoolmates.
On Wednesday 3/14, our Kindergarten students will walk to Theatre West to experience Storybook Theatre, an interactive children's theater stage performance based on the story of Aladdin.
This field trip has been paid for by a generous grant acquired by our Enrichment Coordinator, another example of our hard-working PTA benefiting our kids.
Don't forget that also this Wednesday, the third grade classes will be going on the big whale watching field trip that was featured last week. OUR CHILDREN OUR FUTURE PTA Supported Initiative Needs Petition SignaturesOur Children, Our Future is an education initiative supported by many parents and teachers at our school and the California PTA, and we are gathering signatures from legal California voters in order to get on the ballot.
Personal income tax will increase minimally on all but not the lower income bracket. The money will be placed in a separate trust that can only be spent by the provisions of the act, which includes input directly from our school community, and strict accountability for the money on a school-by-school basis from the district. California's governor and legislature are prohibited from using the money.
For Valley View itself, this would mean a per-year addition of:
$220,484 2013-2014
$383,543 2017-2018
$518,872 2023-2024
Click here to see the Fact Sheet and the click here to read more about the petition on Patch.
We are not allowed to seek signatures during PTA meetings, but if you see Bonnie around, please sign the petition.FIVE QUESTIONS Sweet Caroline
CAROLINE PINKEYdiscovered Valley View because her neighbors Tom and Kathleen Whyte sent their children here. She came for a visit, liked the mural, walked around, liked the teachers, and felt like Valley View was a really small, connected school. Her daughter, Scarlett, has been attending since Kindergarten.
Q1: Where were you born? CP: I was born in Santa Monica.Q2: What was your favorite childhood food?CP: Shrimp cocktail and sloppy Joe's.
Q3: What is your least favorite word?CP: My least favorite word is stupid. I'd rather our daughter swear than say stupid about herself or anybody else. "Whatever" is a close second.
Q4: What is your occupation?CP: I'm a mom and I fancy myself an amateur stand up comic. I tell crazy stories to anyone who will listen! Most of my stories aren't fit to print in this newsletter though... In the day, I was a costume designer and worked on a lot of bad TV movies of the week. I basically shopped and bought clothes that I wanted to wear and put them on actors. My husband Michael has a closet full of jackets from movies I did with Robert Urich and Jimmy Smits. Q5: What was your first car?CP: A red and white Lincoln Continental. It was nicknamed "the ambulance." I got it when I was 17. I would get notes left on it, by all my friends who saw it out and about. Occasionally, it would get egged by my really good friends. CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS
