Valley View Celebrates Veterans Kid Wear Red, White and Blue
Many students at Valley View followed the advice of the new Student Council and wore red, white and blue last Thursday to honor veterans.
Ms. Hanlon's class (third grade) had a talk by retired Army officer Chad Bennett who spoke about his involvement in the war in Iraq and Manuel Melendrez talked about Vietnam.

FIVE QUESTIONS
World Traveler
MARY ALVY
I have been teaching at Valley View for 10 years. The first 2 years I was a resource specialist which was very rewarding and then had the opportunity to teach kindergarten which I dearly love and is a perfect fit for me. I participate on 4 school committees - School Site Council, Student Success Team, Social Committee, and Safety Committee. I love the Valley View community. It feels like home.
Working with young children is a joy and a gift. To me, kindergarten is the foundation on which the rest of a child's education and life rests. I take seriously the responsibility of providing the skills and knowledge kindergarteners need in order to have a solid, strong foundation. It is an honor to be part of this very important year.
I grew up in Gary, Indiana and moved to Los Angeles when I was 24 to obtain my master's degree in special education at Cal State L.A. As soon as I arrived I knew I was never going to back to Indiana. Living close to the ocean was the main reason.
Q1: What is your favorite occupation?
MA: Being a mother to my 2 daughters. What an amazing experience it has been helping them to grow into independent, caring, adventuresome adults. My older daughter is getting her Ph.D. in psychology and my younger daughter is a Peace Corps volunteer in Botswana. I am honored to be their mom.
Q2: How do you enjoy spending your time? MA: I love to travel - I will be going to Africa next summer. I love music - I am learning how to play the drums. I love being outdoors in nature. I love hanging out and having fun with friends and my daughters. Q3: What do you like about being a teacher? MA: Working with kindergarteners allows me to be creative, to have fun, to be disciplined and allows me to observe the joy and excitement they have about learning. Q4: What is your favorite word? MA: Actually I have several favorite words. I like the words mindful, tenacious, and anemone. I also like many words from the British like wanker, the loo, brilliant, and bollocks. Q5: What is your motto?MA: I have two actually. One is "no regrets". The other is "leap and the net will appear".
