4th Of July Celebration Closer To Reality, Councilman Says

About $30,000 more in pledges are making it more likely than not that Suisun City will have a 4th of July fireworks show.

Correction and Clarification 3/7/12: I added "in pledges" to the second paragraph to input an important detail. I also omitted information in that paragraph that was not refelcted in the notes.

City Councilman Sam Dering, who sits on an ad hoc committee to raise money for the city's 4th of July celebration, is more confident this week that the show may go on.

"We're up about $30,000 right now," in pledges, more than at last count on Feb. 9, Derting said. "There is a stronger possibility that it will happen than it won't."

Various estimates place the cost of the event anywhere from $60,000 up to $100,000.

Set to fuel fundraising within the next two weeks is a drive to get average residents in Fairfield and Suisun City to donate to the event through a website.

Derting said the ad hoc committee already plans to get the word out through the paper to reach more Fairfield residents.

The Suisun City Council is scheduled to talk Tuesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall about the sale of so-called safe and sane fireworks in the city and ironing out specific terms of contracts with nonprofit groups and a fireworks vendor that may yield money for city events and nonprofit groups.

Also on the agenda will be the restrictions the council may place on the use of safe and sane fireworks.
