FAIRFIELD, CA — Students at Sullivan Language Immersion Academy celebrated Día de los Muertos on Monday with traditional altars, performances, crafts and activities highlighting the school's dual-language immersion program.
The celebration was among several held across Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District schools, according to a district news release.
Students participated in face painting, created artwork and sampled pan de muerto, a traditional bread associated with the holiday.
"This celebration means so much to our students, families and staff! It's an experience that extends beyond the classroom, creating opportunities to share traditions, build cultural understanding and strengthen connections across our community," Principal Daniel Garcia said in the release.
The annual event connected classroom learning with cultural traditions through hands-on activities and student performances.
Sullivan offers a Spanish-English dual-language immersion program emphasizing bilingualism, biliteracy and cultural understanding.
Students begin with most instruction in Spanish before gradually increasing English instruction. By grades 5-8, the program reaches an equal balance between the two languages.
"Cultural experiences like Día de Muertos are an important part of the Sullivan educational experience," Superintendent Jennifer Sachs said in the release.
