Armijo girls open hoop playoffs at home; Rodriguez boys to travel

Both teams will take on Merced-based opponents in the Sac-Joaquin Section tourney

Armijo High's girls and the Rodriguez High boys learned who'll they meet to open the Sac-Joaquin Section basketball playoffs on Sunday.

Armijo's Monticello Empire League champion girls were seeded fifth in the section Division I bracket and will host No. 12 Merced on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Rodriguez, the Solano County Athletic Conference boys titlist, earned the ninth seed in Division I. The Mustangs will travel to play Golden Valley, the No. 8 seed, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Armijo's girls rolled through the MEL with a 10-0 record, 22-5 overall. Merced finished third in the Central California League, going 10-5 in the league and 19-8 overall.

If the Indians win, they'll play the winner of the game between fourth-seeded Turlock and No. 13 seed Franklin, of Elk Grove. That game would be held on Thursday at the home of the team with the highest seed.

Rodriguez sizzled down the stretch to win the league crown. The Mustangs are 19-8 overall and finished 9-1 in the SCAC. Golden Valley, from Merced, is 23-4 overall after finishing 13-2 in the Central California League.

The winner of the Rodriguez-Golden Valley game will take on the survivor of the match between No. 1 seed Sheldon and No. 16 Monterey Trail, both Elk Grove schools. The second round will be played Friday at the home of the highest surviving team.
