Armijo Girls To Open NorCal Hoop Tourney In Palo Alto
Gunn High will host sizzling Indians as state title chase resumes

Armijo High’s girls basketball team are out to start a new winning streak when they open the Northern California Division I Tournament.
The Indians (24-6) visit Gunn High (19-6) in Palo Alto at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Armijo had a 16-game winning streak snapped last week in the Sac-Joaquin Section D-I semifinals.
The two teams appear evenly matched with the Indians ranked 41st in the Freeman Maxpreps.com California Division I rankings. The Titans are rated 45th in the state in Division I.

The Indians’ explosive attack and stifling defense will be trying to advance to the Northern California quarterfinals on Thursday against one of the four, top-seeded teams that drew first-round byes after winning state section championships.
Armijo enters the game averaging 62.5 points per game, while Gunn averages 42.6 per game. The national scoring average, according to MaxPreps.com is 41.6 points per game.

Gunn has been sizzling, but lost a thriller to Palo Alto, 54-44, in the Central Coast Section championship game at the University of Santa Clara on Saturday. Armijo had the 16-game winning streak snapped when St. Francis, of Sacramento, rolled to an 83-40 victory last week at the University of Pacific in Stockton.
Julia Maggioncalda, whos scored 11 points against Palo Alto, will play a key role for Gunn on Tuesday. Claire Klausner, Cat Perez, and Nora Shevrick are crucial against Armijo’s pressing defense, too.
“We need to put this (the Palo Alto loss) behind us and look ahead,” said Gunn head coach Sarah Stapp. “We’re going to regroup and be ready for the Northern California tournament.”
Armijo will again be led by point guard Marshanique Hall, who averages 12.5 points per game. The Monticello Empire League MVP is joined buy star center Melaya Gaines, a dominant rebounder, who averages 12.7 points.
Guard Chloe Dawkins averages 14.5 points per game for the Indians.
