Behind Bars: Fairfield Man Suspected Of Pistol-Whipping, Handcuffing Elderly Woman To Chair

A Fairfield man suspected of pistol whipping an 82-year-old woman and handcuffing her to a chair during a residential burglary turned himself in to police Wednesday.

The elderly woman encountered an unknown person when she went to the garage at her home in the 400 block of Dahlia Street around 8 a.m. on Sept. 12, Fairfield police Lt. Stephen Crane said.

She tried to get back in the house and close the interior garage door when the man forced his way into the house, Crane said.

The man struck the woman in the head with a handgun, knocking her to the ground, then handcuffed her to a chair, Crane said.

The suspect searched the house for valuables and fled.

The victim’s in-home care provider arrived at about 8:30 a.m., found the woman handcuffed and called police, Crane said.

Police searched the area with a K-9 unit but could not find the suspect who had fled 10 minutes earlier, Crane said.

Detectives identified Darnell Underwood as a suspect, and on Oct. 31 they searched his home in the 300 block of East Bell Street where they found items associated with the robbery, Crane said.

An arrest warrant was issued for Underwood, 42, on allegations of robbery, elder abuse, assault with a firearm and false imprisonment.

On Wednesday Underwood and his attorney went to the Fairfield Police Department where Underwood was arrested.

He was booked in the Solano County jail under a $500,000 bail, Crane said.

Underwood has had numerous contacts with police on weapons, drug, burglary, DUI, evading police, conspiracy and traffic related offenses, Crane said.
