Body of Sonoma Wrestling Coach Tragically Recovered From Lake Berryessa

Roger Winslow, nicknamed "Deets," of Glen Ellen, disappeared in the lake on Aug. 9.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office on Monday recovered the body of a Sonoma County man who likely drowned in Lake Berryessa last month.

The sheriff’s marine patrol unit and dive team found the remains of 49-year-old Roger Winslow of Glen Ellen in 160 feet of water.

Winslow, whose nickname was “Deets,” was the longtime wrestling coach at Sonoma Valley High School.

His body was raised from the bottom of the lake in The Narrows area to a safe diving level by a remote controlled vessel with a robotic arm, sheriff’s Capt. Doug Pike said.

The dive team brought Winslow’s body to the surface and the Napa County coroner’s office tentatively identified him by a distinctive tattoo, Pike said.

Winslow’s family was notified and an autopsy will be conducted later this week.

Winslow disappeared in the lake on Aug. 9 when the twin-motor 2001 Eliminator speedboat he was driving at 40-50 mph experienced a mechanical failure around 6:20 p.m.

The boat pitched hard to the right, throwing Winslow into the water, according to the sheriff’s office. One of the two other passengers on board entered the water and tried to find Winslow, Pike said. There was evidence Winslow was struck by at least one propeller and a dive team searched the deep water for two days, Pike said.

The Santa Clara County and Marin County sheriff’s offices contributed personnel and equipment to the search Monday, Pike said.

Searchers used a former U.S. Navy oil skimmer that the Napa County Sheriff’s Office converted into a platform to support diving operations, Pike said.
