The Fairfield Police Department’s Explorer Program provides teens an opportunity to participate in community events and help foster public-police cooperation and understanding. Police Explorers receive age-appropriate training and gain experience that is valuable to those wishing to pursue a law enforcement career. Explorers also have opportunities to enjoy recreational activities, community service, and participate in fundraising programs.

What is a Police Explorer?

Police Explorers are teens and young adult volunteer employees of the Fairfield Police Department. They help the Police Department streamline services by performing tasks that don’t necessarily need to be done by an officer, but are necessary nonetheless. They are a critical component of the Police Department’s many successful crime prevention and community service projects. Some Explorers are already on law enforcement career paths, while others may not be, but are interested in serving their community and representing youth in a positive way.

Activities

Police Explorers learn how the criminal justice system works, and the Police Department’s role in it. They participate in the Police Department by assisting with Neighborhood Watch, Communications, and Patrol Divisions. Qualified Explorers may ride along with Patrol Officers during patrol shifts. They also work Explorer patrol shifts in teams of two and take non-suspect police reports, assist with missing persons, and perform traffic control when needed at accident scenes.

Requirements

In order to be eligible to apply for the Explorer position, candidates must be between the ages of 14 to 21, be enrolled in school, and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA. They must be free from any physical or mental condition that could impair participation in the program and have no record of arrest. Explorers must wear a uniform while on-duty. They must also attend bi-weekly team meetings during which they will receive training, assignments, and participate in professional development.

Interested Candidates can obtain an application for this position from the Fairfield Police Department, located at 1000 Webster Street, Fairfield, from any of the School Resource Officers Assigned to the High Schools in Fairfield,or download it online at:
