Local College Steps Up to Educate CSP-Solano Inmates
Offering courses to prison inmates will provide an opportunity for the enrolled students to earn college credits during their incarceration.

Solano Community College District (SCCD) and California State Prison- Solano (CSP-Solano) partner to provide college courses to CSP-Solano inmates.
The program is an academic transfer curriculum provided through correspondence education and taught by SCCD faculty. Offering courses to prison inmates will provide an opportunity for the enrolled students to earn college credits during their incarceration within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), without negative fiscal impact to CDCR or CSP-Solano.
“The District is excited to teach courses to Solano County prison inmates,” shared Dr. Jowel C. Laguerre, SCC Superintendent-President.

“Education is the key to unlocking one’s future, therefore, it is Solano Community College’s responsibility to respond and deliver services to those who want to improve their future opportunities. Being a part of the solution to reduce recidivism in individuals currently serving time, but will one day rejoin society- is our business!”
In addition to the courses taught through correspondence, SCCD will also address Student Service needs such as counseling, placement, and disability support services, to successfully move students through their program. Dr. Kenya Williams, CSP-Solano Supervisor of Corrections Educational Programs stated, “Seeing this partnership come to fruition makes me very happy. The positive impact it will have on the community, as well as the incarcerated population is what providing this type of program is about. Education creates opportunities, therefore, the future of the inmates looks to be promising!”
