Man Dies 'Dancing' On Hwy 4 Late Thursday Night

A 33-year-old Richmond man reported to be dancing on state Highway 4 in Pittsburg late Thursday night was killed after he was hit by as many as three cars, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Around 11:50 p.m., CHP officers responded to reports of a male pedestrian dancing and running from the right shoulder to center divider on eastbound Highway 4 east of Loveridge Road, CHP Officer John Fransen said.

As officers were en route to the scene, the CHP received additional reports that the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, Fransen said.

Officers found the pedestrian on a lane and emergency responders pronounced him dead at around 12:10 a.m. today, according to Fransen.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the pedestrian had been struck multiple times, possibly by as many as three vehicles, he said.

One of the three vehicles was a Toyota driven by a 49-year-old Brentwood man who stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities, Fransen said.

The other two vehicles, one described as a dark-colored SUV, fled the scene, he said.

The Contra Costa County coroner’s office has not identified the man pending notification of his next of kin.
