Nearby PD Warns Of Impersonation Scam

Remember that numbers on your phone's "caller ID" can be spoofed.

News from the Davis PD:

The Davis Police Department today took an IRS scam report with a new twist. In this case, the scammer called the victim impersonating an IRS agent and demanded the victim pay money to avoid arrest.

When the victim hung up, she immediately received a call from someone impersonating an employee at the Davis Police Department. The caller, impersonating a Davis police officer, told the victim she needed to cooperate with the IRS or she would be arrested. The caller ID on her phone showed the actual Davis Police Department phone number(530-747-5400). Fortunately, the victim recognized this as a scam.

As these scams become more sophisticated, we encourage people to be aware and stay extremely skeptical of any phone calls demanding money.

The Davis Police Department is not a collection agency and does not collect fines or money owed to the IRS. If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be a police official, you should obtain a name and badge number, hang up, and call back (using our standard business number) to speak to the officer in order to confirm his/her identity. Remember that numbers on your phone’s “caller ID” can be spoofed.
