No. 1 seed Sheldon eliminates Rodriguez boys in basketball tourney

Mustangs finish sterling campaign with 20-9 record

ELK GROVE -- Darius Nelson poured in 31 points Friday to lead sizzling Sheldon High's boys to a 93-74 win over Rodriguez in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I basketball tournament.

Nelson, the brother of former Vallejo High and Duke University star DeMarcus Nelson, is bound for the University of Texas El Paso in the fall. He got help in the form of 22 points from D'Erryl Williams.

The No. 1-seeded Huskies advanace to the semifinals at the University of Pacific next week with a 21-7 record.

Rodriguez finishes the season 20-9 overall. The Mustangs won the Solano County Athletic Conference with a 9-1 record.

The quarterfinal setback capped brilliant seasons for Rodriguez stars Franky Johnson, B.J. Smith and guard Rae Jackson

Smith, a 6-foot-5 senior, finished averaging 10.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Johnson, a 6-foot-1 guard, was the team's leading scorer with 12.2 points per game. The sophomore guard Jackson averaged 11.1 points.

Six-foot-4 senior center Devon Pouncey averaged 8.2 points and 4.5 boards per contest for first-year head coach Al Attles Jr.
