UPDATE: Fatal Morning Collision in Fairfield Investigated as Possible DUI

The fatal crash happened around 6:30 a.m. on East Travis Boulevard near Anna Kyle Elementary School.

A driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in Fairfield early WednesdayΒ morning was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of a controlled substance, police said.

The driver was identified as 31-year-old Fairfield resident Nathan Vargas. Police said he was driving the wrong way and partially on the sidewalk on East Travis Boulevard when he hit the pedestrian in a crosswalk at San Bruno Street and then struck a power pole at 5:20 a.m.

The pedestrian, a 44-year-old Fairfield man, died at the scene.

His name has not yet been released pending notification of his family. Vargas stopped after the collision and when police arrived, they detained and arrested him. He was booked into Solano County Jail, police said.

East Travis Boulevard between Dover Avenue and Eisenhower Street was closed for several hours as police investigated the collision and PG&E made repairs to the power pole. The road reopened by 1:30 p.m., police said.

A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle in Fairfield on Wednesday morning in a case police are investigating as a possible DUI, a police spokeswoman said.

The victim, a man whose name has not yet been released, was struck by a silver, four-door Toyota Camry traveling east on East Travis Boulevard near San Bruno Street, police Officer Kathryn McCormick said.

Police initially reported the collision shortly before 6:30 a.m. The car struck the pedestrian and then hit a PG&E power pole. The pedestrian died at the scene, McCormick said.

The 31-year-old driver from Fairfield stopped at the scene and was detained, McCormick said. The driver’s name is also not yet being released.

A vehicle fatally struck a pedestrian in Fairfield this morning, according to police.

The collision occurred on East Travis Boulevard near San Bruno Street, near Anna Kyle Elementary School. A vehicle traveling east on East Travis hit the pedestrian, then struck a power pole, police said.

Police initially reported the collision shortly before 6:30 a.m. The man, whose name is not yet being released, died at the scene, according to police.

East Travis Boulevard is expected to be closed in the area for most of the day while police investigate the collision and the PG&E pole is repaired.
