Indians girls capture first league championship since 2001

Armijo High's girls' basketball team has reason to celebrate.

The Indians are ranked fourth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I power ratings and almost surely will host a first-round home game next week.

When those playoffs begin, Armijo will enter as the Monticello Empire League champions. The Indians beat Vacaville, 68-59, on Tuesday to clinch their first league crown in 10 years.

The streaking Indians won their 13th straight game to improve to 21-5 overall and to 9-0 in the league. They claim their first title since 2001.

Head coach Christian Stoll's club got points, including key scores in the overtime period, from Justice Robinson-Kroon. Chloe Dawkins scored 12 points and Melaya Gaines 10.

The top 16 teams in next week's final power rankings earth Sac-Joaquin Section playoff spots. The top eight teams in the ratings will host first-round games.

If the playoffs opened today, Armijo would tip-off at home against 13th-rated Grace Davis (16-9).

Armijo is in position to climb in the rankings with an season-ending victory at Fairfield on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Indians power ranking is 6.557, while third-ranked Turlock (18-5) is 6.650.

Rodriguez High's boys inched closer to a Solano County Athletic Conference championship to go with an SJS Division I tournament bid.

The first-place Mustangs drubbed Benicia, 90-58, Tuesday after learning they are ranked 11th in the power ratings. A playoff spot is assured Rodriguez.

The Mustangs are 9-1 in the SCAC and 18-8 overall after B.J. Smith scored 18 to help bury Benicia.
