Solano Christian Academy Teacher Honored as 'Symetra Hero in the Classroom'

Symetra, Wells Fargo and the San Francisco 49ers honored Solano Christian Academy teacher Karen Gibb as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” on Sept. 25, 2014 during a surprise school assembly. Gibb teaches third and fourth grades at the Fairfield, Calif., K–8 school.

“Karen Gibb is a wonderful, caring teacher. My daughter arrived in her classroom from another school unable to read. Miss Gibb worked tirelessly with her every day, and she now is reading chapter books one level above her grade,” said Gina Conyers, the parent of one of Gibb’s former students. “Miss Gibb gave my daughter confidence, determination and the drive not to quit when things get tough. She took my child under her wing, and I’ve watched her blossom. Thanks to Miss Gibb, my daughter believes she has it within herself to do and be anything she wants when she grows up.” Conyers nominated Gibb for the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom® award.

Gibb is one of 16 K–12 teachers in the San Francisco Bay Area who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2014 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations, and they receive a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies. In addition, they receive tickets to a 49ers home game and a special pre-game experience at Levi’s Stadium. Gibb attended the Sept. 28 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to make a real difference in students’ lives; to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities; and to help students build life skills.
