Tear Gas Used In Standoff With Secret Service, SWAT: Fairfield PD

U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Marshal's Service called Fairfield police for backup when a fugitive was thought barricaded inside a home.

FAIRFIELD, CA — Federal agents with the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Marshals Service called for backup from the Fairfield Police Department as they worked to apprehend a homicide fugitive believed to barricaded inside a Fairfield home Wednesday morning.

The incident in the 3300 block of Shenandoah Court began to unfold at about 7 a.m., Fairfield police Lt. Matt Bloesch said in a news release.

"The Secret Service had gone to the residence as part of an investigation they are conducting and encountered an uncooperative person in the house who barricaded himself and refused to come out," Bloesch said.

Fairfield police responded and helped establish a perimeter around the home, but after several unsuccessful attempts at getting the fugitive to come outside, Fairfield PD's SWAT team was requested at the scene, Bloesch said.

When SWAT team members and crisis negotiators tried to establish contact with anyone in the home but received no responses, tear gas was released inside the residence, Bloesch said.

Six people eventually came out and were turned over to the custody of federal agents.

Four of the occupants were taken into custody on warrants and two were taken into custody on probable cause for arrest, U.S. Marshals spokesman Mike McCloud said.

The fugitive was not located, McCloud said.

"Once Fairfield PD determined no additional people were in the house, the scene was turned back over to the custody of the federal agents to continue their investigation," Bloesch said. "No suspects, officers or civilians were injured during this incident. Fairfield PD turned the scene back over to federal agents at approximately 3:15 p.m."

Fairfield police referred questions about the case and the suspect's identity to the Sacramento Field Office of the U.S. Secret Service.

A voicemail left by Patch was not immediately returned by the Secret Service Wednesday afternoon; Patch will update this post should we hear back.
