VIDEO: Mayor Pete Sanchez Goes 1-on-1 With Patch
The town mayor describes his journey from the Philippines to Suisun City.
Suisun City Mayor Pete Sanchez didn't expect to stay in the United States when his wife-- then girlfriend -- wanted to "try" moving to America in 1980, so he applied for a two-month vacation from his job in Manila at the time, expecting a prompt return.
But the land of opportunity was too good to leave. So far Sanchez has served three Suisun City Council terms and two stints as mayor later.
The Suisun transplant originally became fond of the city while serving in the Air Force Reserves at Travis Air Force Base in 1983. Sanchez saw the grazing cows in the fields next to Highway 12 on his commute to the base, which reminded of his old hometown in the Phillipines. The then-Oakland resident suddenly realized Suisun was a place he could call home.
