PERRIS, CA — Police were asking for the public's help in locating an autistic 19-year-old man with the mental capacity of a young child who went missing in Perris, authorities said Friday.
The mother of Dakarai Evans contacted police at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday to say he left their home in the 1100 block of Perrisito Street and she did not know where he went, according to Perris police Sgt. Rob Roggeveen.
"Dakarai Evans is 19 years old, but has the mental capacity of a 6 year old, and is autistic," Roggeveen said in a news release. "Dakarai has done this in the past and has been found at local businesses and/or walking around the neighborhood...Dakarai is considered at risk because of his mental capacity."
A search of the area with a bloodhound was not successful, he said.
Evans is described as black, 5 feet 5 inches tall, 155 pounds, with brown hair and eyes, the sergeant said. He wears thick-rimmed LaCoste eye glasses and was last seen wearing dark sweats with a thin Raiders logo on the side, a white T-shirt, dark hoodie and flip flops.
"He will not engage anyone in conversation but will talk to you if you engage him first," according to the sergeant.
Anyone with information was asked to call sheriff's dispatch at (951) 776-1099 or Deputy Sison at (951) 210-1000.
