RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — Looking for legal ways to pay less tax? Here's an easy one (as provided for in the California Constitution):
The Riverside County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder is reminding homeowners to file for the "Homeowners’ Property Tax Exemption," available to those who own and occupy their property as their principal residence.
The exemption reduces a property’s assessed value by $7,000, which can result in annual property tax savings.
To qualify, a homeowner must own and occupy the property as their principal place of residence as of the January 1 lien date. To claim the exemption, the homeowner must make a one-time filing with the Riverside County assessor.
Once an application has been filed and granted, the Homeowners' Exemption will continue as long as you own and occupy the same residence. Per California law, a property owner may claim only one Homeowners' Exemption.
"If you own and live in your home, filing for the Homeowners’ Exemption is a simple step that can help reduce your property taxes each year," said Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder Peter Aldana.
The Assessor’s Office mails an application as a courtesy following the purchase or transfer of a residential property; however, it remains the homeowner’s responsibility to file the claim. There is no fee to apply.
Homeowners who have not filed or are unsure whether they are currently receiving the exemption are encouraged to review their status and submit a claim if needed. Additional information on eligibility and how to file is available at RivCoACR.org.
To receive the full exemption for the current year, claims must be filed by February 15. Claims filed after February 15, but on or before December 10, may qualify for a partial exemption for that year. Once approved, the exemption will remain in place as long as the homeowner continues to own and occupy the property as their primary residence.
