California's Safest, And Least Safe, Hospitals As Found in Health Report Card: LIST

Ever wonder which hospitals in California are the safest — and which ones you might do better to avoid if possible? A nonprofit founded by employers and health care providers announced its fall 2016 hospital safety rankings this week, a measure of how safe a hospital is for patients in the Golden State.

At the state level, California was ranked 26th in the nation in the Leapfrog Group's latest 'Hospital Safety Grade' report. Hawaii was ranked number one.

To compile their rankings, the Leapfrog Group uses "30 evidence-based measures of patient safety," including things like patient injuries, accidents and infections. Numerical scores are converted into letter grades. Of the 2,633 hospitals evaluated, 844 earned an “A,” 658 earned a “B,” 954 earned a “C,” 157 earned a “D” and 20 earned an “F."

Of the 20 "F" hospitals throughout the nation– nine of them are right here in California.

But don't let that scare you off from seeking healthcare here, as there are 81 "A" hospitals up and down the state. There are another 63 "B" hospitals and 88 "C." The remaining 25 hospitals that were ranked in California received a "D."

Leapfrog says the goal was to determine a patient's risk of further injury or infection if they visited a certain hospital.

“In the fast-changing health care landscape, patients should be aware that hospitals are not all equally competent at protecting them from injuries and infections," Leapfrog President and CEO Leah Binder said. "We believe everyone has the right to know which hospitals are the safest and encourage community members to call on their local hospitals to change, and on their elected officials to spur them to action. States that put a priority on safety have shown remarkable improvements."

Hospitals given a B rating by Leapfrog had a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death than A hospitals. That number jumps to 35 percent in C hospitals and 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals.

Leapfrog says that if you experience a medical emergency, patients should always go to the nearest hospital, no matter the grade.
