IDYLLWILD, CA — The onset of wintry weather on Highway 243 between Idyllwild and Mountain Center Monday prompted the California Highway Patrol to impose chain control requirements for all motorists traveling the two-lane mountain corridor.
About 2:30 p.m., CHP officers established a checkpoint at the junction of Highways 74 and 243, telling drivers to utilize chains because of anticipated snowfall on the 243, which spans nearly 30 miles between Mountain Center and Banning.
Precipitation was not falling in the area as of 3:30 p.m. However, according to the National Weather Service, the Idyllwild-Pine Cove area is likely to receive two to four inches of snow overnight.

The snow level was expected to drop to 3,500 feet Monday night, according to the NWS.
The latest winter storm arrived over the Inland Empire early Monday afternoon. It's expected to exit Tuesday afternoon, only to be replaced by a bigger storm system Wednesday.
