Chaparral Boys Soccer Team Wins Southwestern League Title, 2021-22
Coach A.J. Covarrubias said the Chaparral High School team is in "control of their own destiny" as the playoffs approach.
TEMECULA, CA —The Chaparral High School boys varsity soccer team has secured the Southwestern League championship after an undefeated 2021-22 season.
The Pumas, coached by A.J. Covarrubias, ended their league season with a record of 9-0-6, 5-0-5 in the league—a first in 40 years of gameplay in the region.
In their final league match against Murrieta Valley, the Nighthawks could not crack the Puma's solid defense. The tie left Chaparral undefeated, and the boys left the field with the Southwestern League title in hand.

The Puma defense, led by center-back team captain Danny Whelan and goalkeeper Breckon Robirds, allowed a mere five goals for the entire 2021-22 league season, according to stats.
The Pumas enter the playoffs ranked 7th out of nearly 60 teams among the California Southern Section Division 3 teams, according to MaxPreps.com.

Chaparral will now get ready to battle its way through the CIF Southern Section for the 2021-22 playoffs.
"We put in a good effort not to concede any goals, but we need to do a better job when we have the ball," Covarrubias said. "Being in control of your destiny is both a blessing and a curse. It puts pressure on the players knowing what has to be done, But I think our kids thrive on the pressure."
