Details Released In Fatal SR-79 Crash Near Temecula: CHP

TEMECULA, CA — The California Highway Patrol has released details about a head-on crash along Highway 79, just east of Temecula, that killed one person and injured three others Sunday.

The crash occurred around 3:18 p.m., just north of Dugan Drive, according to the agency.

A 29-year-old man driving a Dodger Challenger was headed north on the roadway and crossed into oncoming traffic — over solid double-yellow lines in a curved spot along the highway — in an effort to pass northbound traffic in front of him, according to the CHP.

Two Aguanga residents in a southbound 2018 Subaru Outback were struck head-on by the Challenger. A 60-year-old male passenger in the Subaru died at the scene; the 50-year-old female driver was hospitalized with serious injuries, the CHP reported.

The deceased was identified Monday by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's Bureau as David Schulberg.

A 17-year-old Temecula girl riding in the Challenger sustained moderate injuries. The Challenger driver, whose city of residence was unavailable, was seriously injured in the crash, according to the CHP.

There were no reported arrests, and the crash remained under investigation by the CHP.

The agency reminded motorists to "Never cross over double yellow lines."
