Dolly Parton's Secret Idyllwild Cabin: 'If The Walls Could Sing'

IDYLLWILD, CA — The death of country music legend Dolly Parton hit hard for music fans across generations and genres. After Parton's family announced her passing on Tuesday, thousands of heartfelt messages have been shared online, reflecting the performer's permanent place in American culture and hearts.

The 80-year-old icon touched millions of lives, including residents in a quiet Southern California mountain community.

For years, Parton and her husband, Carl Dean, reportedly owned an 1,800-square-foot mountainside cabin in Idyllwild at 25300 Pine Crest Ave. The couple purchased the retreat in the 1990s before later donating it to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California.

The nonprofit sold the cabin in July 2024 for $585,000. The property sold again last year for $800,000, according to Riverside County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder records.

Subsequent sellers capitalized on the singer's celebrity status and her local residency.

"Dolly Parton's former Idyllwild retreat — a home as iconic as the legend herself," the most recent real estate listing advertised. "If walls could sing, this charming three-story mountain retreat would be belting out a country classic ... nearly everything inside remains just as Dolly left it."

Listing photos showed a tea set placed on a kitchen table, along with printed instructions addressed "to Dolly, from Steve," detailing how to steep English-style tea.

Photos also showed various knickknacks adorning many of the cabin's wood-paneled rooms, including a signed image of Parton in her youth hanging on a wall. A guitar-shaped toilet seat was fixed in a bathroom.

Though Dolly and Carl were the cabin's one-time owners, the singer and her mother "were the last to occupy this home, leaving behind decor, collectibles, and furnishings, all included in the sale. Legend has it that the spacious loft was Dolly's favorite place to write and play her music," according to the listing.

Parton's ownership of the Idyllwild property remained largely private, as the couple guarded their personal life closely. Dean — who died at age 82 on March 3, 2025 — largely shied away from public attention.

The couple met when an 18-year-old Parton moved to Nashville, bumping into each other outside a local laundromat. Two years later, they married in Ringgold, Georgia, settling in the Nashville area, where they called home base for the rest of their lives.
