Smoke Drifts Into Southwest RivCo From 300-Acre Fire On Camp Pendleton

Drift smoke was predicted Monday afternoon in Temecula and Murrieta.

CAMP PENDLETON, CA — Residents living east of U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton were expected to see smoke Monday afternoon due a brush fire burning on the base that was mapped at about 300 acres.

The blaze, dubbed the Aliso fire, was spotted around noon Monday by motorists on Interstate 5. The North County Fire Protection District tweeted, "Smoke may be visible but there is no fire threat to our district." The district includes North County San Diego.

The fire was burning in the base's "impact area," according to the district. Several impact areas, which are used for military training exercises, are located on the northeast portion of the base, west of Temecula.

At 2:44 p.m., base officials clarified that the fire was burning at "Range 132 in the X-Ray impact zone." The area is located in the middle of the base. See map below:

The Camp Pendleton Fire Department was battling the blaze, which the Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System reported had swelled to approximately 300 acres as of 3:40 p.m. Monday. FIRIS is a public-private partnership program that provides real-time intelligence data and analysis on emerging disaster incidents in California. Funded by the California Office of Emergency Services, FIRIS supports aircraft, a common operating picture, and near-real-time fire modeling.

"There is no imminent threat to nearby communities or personnel," according to base officials.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
