Governor Picks Anza Man To Serve On California Arts Council
A member of the Cahuilla Band of Indians, Gerald Clarke is also a professor of ethnic studies at UC Riverside.
ANZA, CA — A member of the Cahuilla Band of Indians in Anza and a longtime art professor was selected to serve on the California Arts Council, the governor's office announced Friday.
Gerald Clarke, 54, of Anza was picked by Gov. Gavin Newsom in his latest round of state appointments.
The state Senate must confirm the selection in the current legislative session.

According to the governor's office, Clarke, a Democrat, is currently a professor of ethnic studies at UC Riverside, where he was hired in 2016.
Between 1998 and 2016, the professor was chair of visual arts for the Idyllwild Arts Academy, during which time he also served as cultural preservation coordinator for the Cahuilla tribe.

Clarke additionally spent six years as assistant art professor at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma.
He is a graduate of Austin State University in Texas, from which he received a master of fine arts degree, and he served two terms on the Cahuilla Tribal Council.
The California Arts Council service is not salaried, though members receive per diem compensation for travel and related expenses, according to the governor's office.
