Great Oak High Celebrates Academic Decathlon Honor

The high school placed among the top scorers in this year's Riverside County Academic Decathlon.

TEMECULA, CA — Great Oak High School is celebrating a win from the weekend's Riverside County Academic Decathlon. The school's teams took home second place overall.

Elsinore High School took home the championship title, followed by: Great Oak High School (Temecula Valley USD) who finished second, Corona High School Gold (Corona-Norco USD) who placed third, San Jacinto High School (San Jacinto USD) who finished fourth, and Beaumont High School Blue (Beaumont USD) who placed fifth.

A total of 21 teams from 18 high schools competed in the RivCo event, which is now in its 35th year. Only Beaumont, Corona and John W. North had two teams compete. Statewide, more than 5,000 students were expected to be involved in the decathlon competition this year.

Elsinore will once again represent Riverside County at the California Academic Decathlon in Sacramento on March 22-25, 2018. The California champion will advance to the United States Academic Decathlon set for April 19-21 in Frisco, Texas.

The first day of this year’s competition was January 27, and featured essay writing, speeches, and interviews. The following weekend started with written tests in the morning followed by the popular Super Quiz.

Each team is composed of nine students, three from each grade point category, and includes three Honor (GPA 3.75-4.00), three Scholastic (GPA 3.00-3.74), and three Varsity (GPA 0.00-2.99) students. Students accumulate individual and team points in written events in mathematics, economics, art, music, literature, science, social science, and Super Quiz. Statewide, over 5,000 students and 2,800 volunteers are involved in Academic Decathlon in 2018 that featured a theme of Africa.
