Great Oak High School Battles In Academic Decathlon

Seventeen teams from 16 local high school teams competed.​

TEMECULA, CA — Great Oak High School fought hard to claim fifth place in the 37th Riverside County Academic Decathlon.

Sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education, the event took place over two Saturdays — January 25, and February 1, at Vista del Lago High School in Moreno Valley. Seventeen teams from 16 local high school teams competed.

Elsinore High School won the championship for the fourth consecutive year. Hemet High School finished second and West Valley High School in Hemet was third. Western Center Academy in Hemet finished fourth and Temecula's Great Oak High School was fifth overall. Hemet High School was the winner of the popular Super Quiz.

The theme for 2020 was "In Sickness and in Health: An Exploration of Illness and Wellness." The
first day of this year's competition featured essay writing, speeches, and interviews. The following Saturday, teams competed via written tests in the morning followed by the popular Super Quiz.

Elsinore High School nows moves on to the California Academic Decathlon, March 26-29, 2020, in Sacramento. The California state champion advances to the United States Academic Decathlon, April 30 to May 2, 2020, in Anchorage, Alaska.

Each team is composed of nine students, three from each grade point category, and includes three Honor (GPA 3.75-4.00), three Scholastic (GPA 3.00-3.74), and three Varsity (GPA 0.00-2.99) students.

Students accumulate individual and team points in written events in mathematics, economics, art, music, literature, science, social science, and Super Quiz.

For 2020, the 17 teams competing from 16 Riverside County high schools included:

— Elsinore High School, Lake Elsinore;
— Great Oak High School, Temecula;
— Hemet High School;
— JFK High School, Norco;
— John W. North High School, Riverside;
— Palm Desert High School;
— San Jacinto High School;
— Shadow Hills High School, Indio;
— Temecula Preparatory Academy;
— Valley View High School, Moreno Valley (two teams);
— Vista del Lago High School, Moreno Valley;
— West Valley High School, Hemet; and
— Western Center Academy, Hemet.
