Iconic Temecula Restaurant Burns: Penfold's Damaged In Fire

TEMECULA, CA — An iconic Temecula eatery suffered an estimated $30,000 in damages in late night fire Tuesday, fire officials reported Wednesday. Though the damage at Penfold's Cafe & Bakery was mostly contained to a walk-in cooler and parts of the kitchen, it's not clear how long the diner will be closed.
The fire was first reported at 10:02 p.m. in the 28000 block of Old Town Front Street, according to April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department.
"The first arriving engine company reported a single story commercial structure, with heavy smoke from the rear, and a working fire in the kitchen," she said.

A total of 21 firefighters from five engine companies were sent to the blaze, which was contained by 10:38 p.m., according to Newman. An estimated

Despite the reported damages, fire officials estimate $1.2 million in property was saved. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
