Lake Skinner To Kick Off Fishing Derby With Ribbon-Cutting Of Boat Launch

This weekend, RivCoParks will unveil new renovations to the boat launch before the fishing derby, which will offer cash prizes.

TEMECULA VALLEY, CA — Participants in Lake Skinner's fishing derby will have the opportunity to win cash prizes this weekend after the newly enhanced boat launch is unveiled at with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Operated by the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District, also known as RivCoParks, Lake Skinner Recreation Area spans more than 8,800 acres in southwest Riverside County and is a popular destination for camping, boating and fishing. The lake is home to largemouth and striped bass, catfish, bluegill and other panfish and is widely recognized for its productive fisheries.

“The reopening of the boat launch and the bass fishing derby brings our community together to enjoy everything Lake Skinner has to offer,” said Chuck Washington, Riverside County’s Third District supervisor. “These events create opportunities for families, anglers and visitors to connect while supporting local businesses, showing how our regional parks strengthen both the community and local economy.”

Over the past year, American Rescue Plan Act funding supported infrastructure improvements at the campground, including road upgrades aimed at reducing flooding and improving safety, water system enhancements to limit service disruptions, and renovations at Boat Launch No. 1. The upgrades include new restroom facilities, a fish cleaning station, improved parking and enhanced accessibility.

The formal reopening ceremony is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

The bass fishing derby will begin earlier in the day. Gates open at 5 a.m., with fishing starting at 7 a.m. and the final weigh-in at 12:30 p.m. Awards will be presented at 1 p.m. Derby entry is $35 per person.

Cash prizes, sponsored by the Lake Skinner Campstore and Rental, will be awarded for the largest bass:

  • First place: $1,000
  • Second place: $500
  • Third place: $250

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the first 75 attendees will receive free fishing lures, and a free hot dog lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m.
