No Kidnap Attempt At Walmart Before DUI Crash: Temecula PD

The 41-year-old was arrested Saturday night after hitting another car and rolling his own along Highway 79, officials said.

TEMECULA, CA – The Temecula Police Department today said no evidence was found indicating a suspected impaired driver attempted to lure minors into his car in a Walmart parking lot Saturday night before he allegedly fled from law enforcement and crashed on Highway 79.

"At this time, we do not have any information from any victims to provide evidence supporting an attempt kidnapping case," the department said.

Cameron Lawrence, 41, remains in a local hospital, under arrest for suspected felony driving under the influence, assault with a deadly weapon and evading a peace officer, police said.

Several calls were logged at the agency shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday regarding a "reckless" driver in the Walmart lot on Highway 79, with some reporting "the suspect may have also harassed and attempted to coax juveniles into his vehicle," police said, adding that the motorist purportedly also "purposefully drove at a high rate of speed towards at least two people, nearly striking them."

The suspect, later identified as Lawrence, was pulled over by an officer and was cooperative until a second officer arrived, and he took off in his vehicle, police said.

Lawrence crashed into a second car and rolled his vehicle as he drove east on Highway 79, police said.

Transported to a hospital, Lawrence suffered a broken rib and shoulder and multiple lacerations to his face, police said. The second driver also was taken to an area medical facility.

The Temecula department thanked citizens "for their concern about this incident and the community."
