RivCo Property Owners Reminded To File Tax Reduction Requests Sooner Than Later
Property tax assessments for the most recent tax year are valued as of Jan. 1.
RIVERSIDE, CA — Riverside County property owners who believe that over the last year, their home, business or other fixed asset fell in value — and therefore should be taxed less — were reminded Thursday that only a couple of weeks remain to apply for assessment reductions.
Assessor-Clerk-Recorder Peter Aldana said that Proposition 8 reduction requests must be submitted by Nov. 2.

"Each year, the assessor's office reviews market data and applies reductions where appropriate," according to an agency statement. "Property owners who believe their property may qualify for additional review based on their specific circumstances may submit a request for review."
That provision paves the way for hearings before Assessment Appeals officers and boards if reductions are not approved after the initial filing.

"Property owners who wish to formally challenge their assessed value have a separate option," the Assessor-Clerk-Recorder's Office said. "An assessment appeal application must be filed by Nov. 30, 2026."

Prop 8 followed voter approval of Proposition 13 nearly five decades ago. That statewide tax mitigation measure, spearheaded by Howard Jarvis, resulted in inflation controls specifying that taxes can only go up on an additional 2% each year, though there are exceptions.
The first installment on property tax assessments in the current year falls on Dec. 10.
