Suspected Killer Lived in Temecula

Benjamin C. Barnes, 24, has been named as the suspect in the shooting of a park ranger. He was found dead today face in the snow near Narada Falls in a park, officials said.

The man suspected of killing a U.S. Forest Service ranger at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state may be a Riverside native, The Press-Enterprise reported today.

Police named Benjamin C. Barnes, 24, as the suspect in the Sunday morning shooting of Margaret Anderson, a 34-year-old mother of two.

His body was found today face down in the snow near Narada Falls in the park, a park official said.

Authorities believe Barnes, an Iraq War veteran, fled to the remote park after an earlier shooting that wounded four people near Seattle, sparking a search by about 200 law enforcement officers, the newspaper said.

Barnes' Facebook page lists his hometown as Riverside, and public records showed he has previous addresses in Riverside and Temecula, according to The Press-Enterprise.

In photos on Facebook, a raincross tattoo can be seen on Barnes' stomach. The raincross symbol -- a depiction of the Mass bell used by California Missions founder Father Junipero Serra and the cross to which Navajo Indians prayed for rain -- has been associated with Riverside since 1907, the newspaper said.

An overflying aircraft crew involved in the search for Barnes located his body.

''All that I know is it has been confirmed as Benjamin Colton Barnes, and he is the suspect that we have for the death of Margaret Anderson,'' park spokeswoman Lee Snook told the Los Angeles Times.
