Temecula Pondering Abortion Ban Proposed By Councilmember Alexander

The city of Temecula will discuss the possibility of becoming a "safe haven" for the unborn during the Sept. 27 City Council meeting.

TEMECULA, CA — Temecula City Councilmember Jessica Alexander had pushed to get a memorial erected in the city to remember aborted human embryos and fetuses. Her council colleagues were not on board.

That was before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe. v Wade in June. With the land's highest court taking a position on the matter, Alexander has upped the ante by now calling on her colleagues to consider banning abortion in Temecula.

During the Sept. 13 Temecula City Council meeting, Alexander spent six minutes railing against California's safe abortion access — and legislation designed to protect it.

"Are we willing to stand up and fight for everyone one of us," including the unborn? Alexander asked her colleagues.

"Let us be the first in California," she proclaimed.

Alexander said the council must "fulfill its oath" to protect all residents, of which she included the unborn.

In her remarks, Alexander opposed Assembly Bill 1666 — which was signed into law in June by Gov. Gavin Newsom to protect out-of-state abortion seekers. Alexander also slammed pending Assembly Bill 2223, which would prohibit investigations into causes of death in terminated pregnancies.

After Alexander's lengthy delivery, City Attorney Peter Thorson immediately advised the council that, under its rules of order adopted in Sept. 2021, the councilmember's request to see the issue put before City Council and the public must proceed. A hearing on the proposed abortion ban should be scheduled for the Sept. 27 Temecula City Council meeting, Thorson said. The agenda for that meeting has not been published yet.

According to her bio on the city's website, Alexander is the director of Birth Choice Centers in Temecula. The agency "offers support for people facing pregnancy, parenting and reproductive health concerns," according to its website.

Birth Choice does "not offer, recommend or refer for abortions or abortifacients," but instead is "committed to offering accurate information about abortion procedures and risks," the website reads.
